In 1882, workers struck natural gas on the edge of Paola, and the town lit up its streets with gas lamps before most of Kansas had figured out electricity. A few decades earlier, in 1859, Osawatomie hosted the convention that founded the Kansas Republican Party, and abolitionist John Brown's log cabin still stands today in the 23-acre memorial park that bears his name.
