Fun Facts

Jackson County has been sending people places since the 1800s, when Independence served as the launching point for the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails, basically the original three-lane highway. One local who never strayed too far was Harry S. Truman, who got his start as a Jackson County judge decades before becoming President of the United States. Meanwhile, a small river landing in the county's north called Westport Landing grew into the Town of Kansas, then the City of Kansas, and finally, in 1889, Kansas City itself. That small landing is now the anchor of a two-state metro, with Independence still standing as a co-county seat right alongside it. These days, Jackson County keeps launching people toward something new, just with moving trucks instead of covered wagons. Looks like this county has always known how to help people find their way home.
